in march , april 1938, complete skeleton of 40-year-old woolly mammoth (mammuthus primigenius), antler of reindeer (rangifer tarandus), atlas of polar fox (alopex lagopus), , small paleolithic tool made of black flint found in nevlje workers built bridge across nevljica , deepened bed. first discovered paleolithic hunting settlement in territory of present slovenia , dated around 20,000 bp, time of gravettian culture in latter half of würm period (the last glaciation period). excavations attracted domestic , international public attention, researchers, , politicians. bridge built @ spot named mammoth bridge (slovene: mamutov most). pollen analysis performed @ site first time ana tregubov-budnar, first slovenian palinologist. in 1944, attributed pollen end of interglacial period. later, shown alojz Šercelj belongs würm glaciation. mammoth skeleton 1 of best preserved in europe , has become symbol of natural history museum of slovenia, on display.
