New York State Senate Andrew Lanza







lanza elected new york state senate on november 7, 2006 , took office on january 1, 2007. fills seat vacated senator john j. marchi, retired after 50 years of service in state senate.


lanza has championed improvements staten island’s schools, parks , open spaces. secured millions of dollars new classrooms, computer , science labs, books, playgrounds , school safety improvements. lanza scored victories saving many acres of open space , delivering tens of millions of dollars new active , passive recreational parks. these include first city soccer, baseball, , softball fields staten island’s south shore.


in 2011, lanza voted against marriage equality act, legally recognized same-sex marriages performed in state, in closely divided senate vote of 33-29. @ time, said believed word marriage should “describe union between man , woman.


in december 2013, lanza took issue billboard secured american atheists. published press release on senate web page stated not surprised people not believe in god hateful , malicious , likened billboard religious persecution of kind lead holocaust . called boycott of times square long advertisement in place , irs investigate american atheists eye towards revocation of tax-exempt status. american atheists responded asking if calling boycott of own district s businesses if similar billboard on staten island, , erected 1 there. senator lanza amended press release indicate assumptions of malice , hatred of support billboard, not atheists. current press release senator has removed calls irs investigation, , relented on calls boycott of times square.


lanza secured key agreement mayor bloomberg open new police precinct on staten island. lanza instrumental in opening new firehouse in rossville. called establishment of mayoral traffic , transportation task force. serves on task force in order address staten island’s long standing traffic problems , increase funding public transportation.


lanza serves chairman of senate cities committee , co-chair of both senate ethics committee , legislative ethics commission.


he serves on committees on civil service & pensions; codes; education; finance; insurance; , judiciary.
