timeline of contract
the contract r143 put out bidding in january 1998. initial contract called 100 sixty-foot cars come in five-car sets. new cars expected have automatic pa announcements, high efficiency lighting, emergency intercom , customer alarms, ac propulsion motors, speedometers , event recorders, electronic information display signs, artwork, central diagnostics monitoring system, microprocessor controlled air compressor, brake , communication systems, roof mounted microprocessor controlled hvac, , compliant ada requirements.
kawasaki rail car, inc. awarded $190 million contract 100 new b division cars in late december 1998, option 112 more cars. new design based on division s r142a, kawasaki built, , incorporated many features r110a , r110b prototypes. cars built average cost of $1.5 million per car.
delivery
delivery of cars began in late 2001. 30-day test 1 train of 8 cars (8101-8108) began on december 4, 2001. according kawasaki, test extremely successful . cars began running on canarsie line (l train) on february 12, 2002, have been assigned to. 212 cars delivered march 2003.
along displacing older equipment canarsie line, r143s displaced r42s on now-extended weekend m shuttle service on bmt myrtle avenue line, when line became first bmt eastern division line placed in weekend 1 person train operation (opto) service. r143s on m displaced r160as in february 2008. opto tested on l during mid-2005.
post-delivery
r143 cars 8205-8212 delivered experimental siemens traction motors test traction motors later found in r160b cars 8843-9102. these cars refitted bombardier mitrac traction motors found on other r143s.
on june 21, 2006, eight-car r143 train overshot bumper @ end of tracks in canarsie yard after operator suffered seizure. first car, 8277, suffered significant damage , stripped of damaged parts before being sent kawasaki plant in yonkers receive repairs. other cars in set (8278-8280) moved 207th street yard. eventually, 8277 sent , repaired @ 207th street shop , coney island shops. 8278 suffered minor body damage, repaired sometime between 2009-2011 , subsequently coupled 8279-8280. in 2016 or late 2015, 8277 coupled 8278-8280, consist needed component upgrades become operational. in summer 2017, set seen operational again, has yet return revenue service.
in 2017, 4 cars equipped measuring gauges test out curve radius , gangway flex in existing 60-foot long cars in order collect data evaluating future r211t order.
