the road east jefferson avenue existed earliest days of detroit. known river road, paralleled detroit river east of detroit, connecting french ribbon farms ste. anne street in heart of detroit. after disastrous fire of 1805, judge augustus woodward platted out new design city, widening ste. anne st. , renaming (and connecting river road) jefferson avenue in honor of thomas jefferson.

as 19th century drew close , 20th century began, area around jefferson avenue became more industrialized. wealthy residents, spurred availability of streetcar lines (and later, automobiles), moved farther city center, leaving jefferson avenue behind. however, booming city economy , influx of new residents in 1910s increased demand new housing. east jefferson avenue became epicenter new luxury apartment buildings, built particularly in 1920s , 1930s. following world war ii, east jefferson became more commercial introduction of modern commercial structures. yet, east jefferson contains clusters of preserved historic structures.
