History Iferouane
iferouane site of first attack carried out niger movement justice (mnj), marked beginning of second tuareg rebellion. numerous clashes between rebel , government forces subsequently took place near town, including attack in december 2007 against supply convoy heading iferouane resulted in deaths of 3 soldiers and, according government, 8 rebels.
in october 2007, president of sos iférouane initiative, local organisation involved delivering supplies town, reported – due insecurity caused rebellion – residents of iferouane had been without food number of weeks. reported increase in incidence of malaria , diarrhoea among town s residents.
in november, iferouane s deputy mayor reported town s entire population – approximately 5,000 residents – had left due shortages of food, tuareg rebellion, , harassment army. central government, based in niamey, confirmed supplies town blocked due mining of roads rebels, denied town had been emptied.
in november 2008, radio france international reporter visited town , described empty of inhabitants , entire population having fled arlit or agadez. during 2009, inhabitants started return , september, 90% of population had returned , agriculture had restarted, despite damaged infrastructure.
