schleswig-holstein lies on base of jutland peninsula between north sea , baltic sea. strictly speaking, schleswig refers german southern schleswig (german: südschleswig or landesteil schleswig, danish: sydslesvig), whereas northern schleswig in denmark (south jutland county). state of schleswig-holstein further consists of holstein, lauenburg , formerly independent city of lübeck.


schleswig-holstein borders denmark (southern denmark) north, north sea west, baltic sea east, , german states of lower saxony, hamburg, , mecklenburg-vorpommern south.


in western part of state, lowlands have virtually no hills. north frisian islands, of schleswig-holstein s north sea coast, form schleswig-holstein wadden sea national park (nationalpark schleswig-holsteinisches wattenmeer) largest national park in central europe. germany s high-sea island, heligoland, situated in north sea.


the baltic sea coast in east of schleswig-holstein marked bays, fjords, , cliff lines. rolling hills (the highest elevation bungsberg @ 168 metres or 551 feet) , many lakes found, in eastern part of holstein called holstein switzerland , former duchy of lauenburg (herzogtum lauenburg). fehmarn island off eastern coast. longest river besides elbe eider; important waterway kiel canal connects north sea , baltic sea.
