founded in 1984 provigo, first 2 maxi grocery stores opened in st. leonard , longueuil. both locations had taken vacated spaces had been occupied kmart stores. both locations still in operation. have expanded throughout years point longueuil outlet maxi & cie hypermarket.
throughout 1980s , 90s, maxi used cartoonish elephant mascot of flyers, in move similar of sister chain héritage used kangaroo. in 1996, maxi enjoyed success chain stopped producing flyers company felt such practice had become unnecessary. turned out miscalculation , maxi started making flyers again.
a lot of maxi stores today were steinberg supermarkets until chain went bankrupt in 1992. in 1993, several provigo stores (especially larger ones) rebranded maxi stores. maxi absorbed provigo s older brand héritage in 1995. maxi briefly used have stores in ontario, converted no frills in 1999 after loblaws purchased provigo.
there 96 maxi stores , 16 maxi & cie in province of quebec.
