little known first observed tropical cyclone of 1859 season, first analyzed in 1995. during late june or july, cities along coastal mexican state of veracruz experienced formidable hurricane, , several ships in gulf of mexico lost. due lack of reports, storm s listing in atlantic hurricane database limited single point near tuxpan, veracruz, on july 1, although date chiefly chosen placeholder in lieu of definitive data. estimated sustained winds reached 105 mph (165 km/h), equivalent category 2 hurricane on modern day saffir–simpson hurricane wind scale.
