in late 2012 , 2013, media speculation focused on possibility of challenge incumbent mitch mcconnell actress , tennessee resident ashley judd, raised in kentucky. judd later announced not seek democratic nomination. on april 9, mother jones magazine released tape of private meeting between mcconnell and, allegedly, aides reviewing opposition research , tactics use against judd. @ february strategy session, mcconnell referred stages of re-election bid whac-a-mole period of campaign , , aides discussed attacking judd s religious views struggle depression.


alison lundergan grimes, sitting secretary of state, entered primary race encouragement of former president bill clinton, friend of grimes father, former kentucky politician. on may 20, 2014, won democratic primary 77% of vote. hollywood executives harvey weinstein , jeffrey katzenberg have hosted fundraising events in new york city , beverly hills. father s involvement in campaign has been noted factor in race because of personal political history , fundraising connections brings.
