protesters pink signs , headwear
yemeni protesters wore pink ribbons symbolise jasmine revolution , indicate non-violent intent. shawki al-qadi, lawmaker , opposition figure, said pink chosen represent love , signal protests peaceful. preponderance of pink ribbons in demonstrations showed level of planning went protests.
opposition factions
according al jazeera in late february, fractured opposition includes joint meeting parties (jmp; formed in 2002), islah (also known yemeni congregation reform , major member of jmp), al-ahmar family, , various insurrection groups including houthis in north , south yemen movement in south. these groups include socialist, islamist , tribal elements differing goals. islah, holds twenty per cent of seats in legislature, includes members of ahmar family, yemen s muslim brotherhood, , salafi preacher abdul majid al-zindani, labeled specially designated global terrorist us. jmp includes yemeni socialist party (ysp), al-haq, unionist party, , popular forces union party. al-ahmar sons – sadek al-ahmar , hamid al-ahmar – late father former leader of hashid tribal confederation, want power. southern movement has temporarily dropped calls secession calls saleh s ouster.
yemeni human-rights activists , students disagree political parties regarding tactics political change in yemen. political parties have called reform take place under president saleh, while students , human rights activists have wished channel momentum of 2010–2011 uprisings in region. in late january, lawyer , human-rights activist involved in organising protests, khaled al-anesi, stated there popular movement , political movement in yemen. there no support political parties popular movement, not organised. still weak , in beginning stages.
on 21 march, financial times reported in absence of obvious candidates presidency, transition of power controlled made pre-emptive strike against him: hamid al-ahmar of islah , jmp, radical cleric abdul majid al-zindani, , islamist-allied general ali mohsen al-ahmar (also called ali mohsen saleh).
southern groups
southern secessionist groups said holding 3 yemeni soldiers kidnapped towards end of january. on 2 february, clashes in south resulted in 3 injuries. growing number of protesters in north sees interest rise of south yemen movement, maybe hoping southern secessionists may overthrow government.
al qaeda
on 6 march, al qaeda in arabian peninsula (aqap) claimed responsibility shooting of 5 soldiers 2 separate attacks during ongoing protests. 4 of soldiers killed in ma rib governorate when perpetrators opened fire on passing military vehicle. 2 of soldiers part of republican guard. other death of army colonel shot went shopping in zinjibar, abyan governorate.
on 31 march 2011, aqap declared islamic emirate in southern abyan governorate.
joint meeting parties
on 2 march, 6 members of jmp issued five-point list of demands: right demonstrate, investigations violence, peaceful transition of government, time schedule within current year, , dialogue both inside , outside of yemen.
on 4 april, jmp issued statement new regime, after saleh s fall, strong ally in war on terror .
alliance of yemeni tribes
a group of anti-government tribes, prominently hashid tribal federation, declared formation of alliance of yemeni tribes on 30 july. alliance headed sheikh sadiq al-ahmar, leader of hashid , former ally of president saleh, , aligned yemen army defectors under leadership of general ali mohsen al-ahmar. in first declaration, vowed solidarity protest movement , warned government attack on protesters or areas under control of yemeni opposition seen attacks on tribes.
on 13 march 2011, coordination council of sana university protestors presented list of 7 demands, starting removal of saleh , creation of temporary presidential council made of representatives drawn yemen’s 4 main political powers along 1 appointed national security , military establishment. many members of revolutionary coalition of youth peaceful change (12 organizations) , organization of liberal yemeni youth appear represented coordination council. on 17 march sent letter president barack obama, copying british pm david cameron , eu president john bruton, explaining group, positions , proposals.
on 8 april 2011, civil coalition of youth revolution (ccyr), yemen-based civil movement includes 52 alliances of revolutionary youth activists around yemen representing more 10,000 members, released statute draft including vision, revolution objectives, principles, duties, mechanisms , goals of interim phase .
national dialogue conference
on 20 march, national dialogue conference issued position paper , list of demands. members jmp, independents, general people s congress members, , social figures including political, tribal , businessmen. headed mohammed salem basandwah, adviser president, , sheik hameed al-ahmer of islah secretary general.
civil bloc
on 24 march, civil bloc, umbrella group of civil society organisations, called transitional council of 9 figures not involved corruption of old regime draw new constitution on six-month period ahead of elections.
