early years

james clarence wakeley born in howard county, arkansas family moved rosedale, oklahoma 1920. teenager, changed surname wakely, dropping second e .


country western musician

in 1937 in oklahoma city, oklahoma formed bell boys, country western singing group named after bell clothing sponsor. group performed locally, made recordings, , did frequent radio broadcasts on oklahoma city s wky. johnny bond, dick reinhart, scotty harrell , jack cheney members of bell boys , later groups. on time, wakely s groups known jimmy wakely trio, jimmy wakely , saddle pals, jimmy wakely trio , james wakely.


during tour through oklahoma, western movie star gene autry invited wakely come california. autry felt group might addition new melody ranch radio show debuted on cbs in january 1940. wakely trio joined show in mid-1940. stayed couple of years, left because of movie commitments , recording contract decca records ran 1941–1942 through 1947. johnny bond stayed show of run (the show left air in 1956).


personal life

wakely married dora inez miser on friday 13th, december 13, 1935. had 4 children: deanna, carol, linda , son johnny. marriage lasted until death in 1982.

about 1941–1942, decca gave wakely recording contract ran until 1947. after leaving films, continued record, switching capitol label. though of songs country western, crossed on pop charts, including collaborations singer margaret whiting , karen chandler, , christmas song silver bells . had number 1 country hit 1 has name (the other has heart) , song released western singer eddie dean.

like other western film stars of era, wakely had own comic book series. dc comics published 18 issues sept/oct 1949–july/aug 1952, billing him hollywood s sensational cowboy star!


radio , television appearances

in addition autry s melody ranch, wakely had own cbs radio show , co-hosted other programs. made several appearances on television variety shows; , in 1961 1 of 5 rotating hosts on nbc-tv program 5 star jubilee.


he had 1 of last live network radio programs @ nbc radio studios @ corner of sunset , vine in hollywood, california in 1958. excerpts of program appear on wakely s albums , cds.


recording company

in 1960s , 1970s, wakely developed shasta records , owned 2 music publishing companies. converted part of california ranch recording studio, producing recordings himself other country western performers, including tex williams, merle travis, eddie dean, tex ritter , rex allen. recording work, wakely has star on hollywood walk of fame on vine street.


later years

later in life, wakely performed @ grand ole opry , national barn dance. nightclub act visited las vegas, reno , other venues. did christmas uso tour bob hope. made few recordings on coral, decca/vocalion , dot labels. made appearances @ western film nostalgia conventions , continued personal appearances , stage shows, daughter linda , son johnny in act.


death

after contracting emphysema, wakely died of heart failure @ mission hills, california on september 23, 1982. , wife, died in 1997, interred next each other in court of remembrance @ forest lawn memorial park (hollywood hills), los angeles, california.
