california valley located on soda lake road 2 miles (3 km) south of state route 58. small general store open, popular small restaurant remains closed. community served school , community center library, open on wednesdays. other state route 58 , bitterwater road, access through carrizo plain via soda lake road, seasonal improved dirt road south of soda lake state route 33/state route 166; or via smaller seasonal dirt roads east , south. no scheduled bus routes serve community, , there no rail lines.

the private , restricted california valley airport class ii-c 4,200 ft (1,300 m) paved runway extends south community center not marked on current aeronautical charts , painted @ south end white x indicating closed although can used advance permission.

community services provided california valley community service district (csd). includes road maintenance , limited trash service. community center includes fire station, small library, , community assembly hall. address 13084 soda lake road, on south side of soda lake road, approximately 2 miles (3.2 km) south of highway 58, in village of california valley.


water, porta-potty , pay phone available @ community center. quality of water in dispute. many california valley residents consider water potable, signage contrary has been posted in past.

law enforcement provided county sheriff, there no local office or assigned unit. california highway patrol infrequently patrols highway 58. no medical services (doctors, clinics, hospitals) available in california valley area. fire , rescue services provided san luis obispo county fire station #42 located @ community center. station staffed tuesday through thursday. helicopter medevac service santa maria , bakersfield available, weather permitting.

the local school carrisa plains elementary school, built in 1953, 46 students in attendance. few high school students bused atascadero, california, had 1 of last high school dormitories in california until 1990s use. nearest community college in taft. nearest four-year university california polytechnic state university, san luis obispo.

the smaller community of simmler 3 miles (4.8 km) northeast along highway 58. bureau of land management operates carrizo plain national monument guy l. goodwin education center 12 miles (19 km) south on soda lake road during limited hours several months of year.
