history

the airport, formerly named shuangguisi airport, opened auxiliary military airfield in 1938 during second sino-japanese war/world war ii. @ time, runway large enough small biplanes. republic of china air force polikarpov i-15 fighters of 5th pursuit group based aerial defense of chengtu area against imperial japanese bomber raids; following chinese retreat wuhan chungking(now chongqing) new provisional capital in aftermath of battle of wuhan against imperial japanese onslaught. civilian targets indiscriminately bombed, , ace fighter pilot of chinese air force major wong sun-shui , lieutenant lin heng (younger brother of renowned architect , poet lin huiyin) flying in i-15 fighter planes both killed near shuangliu air base result of battling against world s best fighter aircraft of time, a6m 0 (reisen) fighter, in defense of chengdu on 14 march 1941.


during world war ii, airport known shwangliu (shuangliu) airfield , later used united states army air forces fourteenth air force part of china defensive campaign (1942–1945). used fighter base 33d fighter group, flew p-47 thunderbolt fighter-bombers airport in 1944 support chinese ground forces, , reconnaissance units operated camera-equipped p-38 lightnings located japanese forces , provided intelligence fighter-bombers. americans closed facilities @ shwangliu airfield @ end of august 1945.


on december 12, 1956, shuangguisi airport put under civil aviation, formally listed civil aviation airport , renamed chengdu shuangliu airport. in 1957, flights of chengdu civil aviation shifted shuangliu airport guanghan airport. flight courses chengdu opened various cities within china including beijing, taiyuan, xi an, chongqing, kunming, guiyang, nanchong, etc. airport went through several earlier expansions in 1959, 1967, 1983 , 1991 respectively.


current status

a large-scale expansion conducted on flight area , navigation area 1994 2001. runway extended 3,600 metres (11,811 ft) class 4e rating, allowing larger jumbo jets including boeing 747-400. newly built terminal building incorporated three-parallel-porch design, accommodating hourly capacity of 3,500 passengers during rush hours, while previous terminal building designated regional flights within sichuan , chongqing.

the construction of second runway started late 2008, , service commenced in december 2009. completed new runway, 3,600 metres (11,811 ft) in length , 60 metres (197 ft) in width, upgraded previous flight area rating 4e 4f, capable of handling airbus a380. new terminal 2 has started construction in june 2009; trial operations began on july 28, 2012 limited airlines , officially opened on august 9, 2012 domestic airlines other sichuan airlines. t1 split domestic , international wings, , retained international flights airlines within , outside china. new terminal twice size of current t1, , allows airport handle 50 million passengers annually.


prior 2014, airport had no nonstop flights united states. passengers traveling chengdu united states had connect @ beijing–capital and/or shanghai–pudong, , take 2 or more stops travel many u.s. cities. shortcoming in service @ chengdu resolved on june 9, 2014, united airlines began operating nonstop service san francisco chengdu. service has since expanded, hainan airlines offers nonstop service chengdu los angeles , begin nonstop service new york (jfk) in october 2017.
