agamemnon (Ἀγαμέμνων, agamémnōn) first of 3 plays within oresteia trilogy. details homecoming of agamemnon, king of mycenae, trojan war. after ten years of warfare, troy had fallen , of greece lay claim victory. waiting @ home agamemnon wife, queen clytemnestra, has been planning murder. desires death avenge sacrifice of daughter iphigenia, exterminate thing hindering commandeering crown, , able publicly embrace long-time-lover aegisthus.


the play opens watchman looking down , on sea, reporting has been lying restless dog year, waiting see sort of signal confirming greek victory in troy. laments fortunes of house, promises keep silent: huge ox has stepped onto tongue. watchman sees light far off in distance—a bonfire signaling troy s fall—and overjoyed @ victory , hopes hasty return of king, house has wallowed in absence. clytaemnestra introduced audience , declares there celebrations , sacrifices throughout city agamemnon , army return.


upon return of agamemnon, wife laments in full view of argos how horrible wait husband, , king, has been. after soliloquy, clytaemnestra pleads , convinces agamemnon walk on robes laid out him. ominous moment in play loyalties , motives questioned. king s new concubine, cassandra, introduced , spawns hatred queen, clytaemnestra. cassandra ordered out of chariot , altar where, once alone, heard crying out insane prophecies apollo death of agamemnon , own shared fate.

inside house cry heard; agamemnon has been stabbed in bathtub. chorus separate 1 , ramble themselves, proving cowardice, when final cry heard. when doors opened, clytaemnestra seen standing on dead bodies of agamemnon , cassandra. clytaemnestra describes murder in detail chorus, showing no sign of remorse or regret. exiled lover of clytaemnestra, aegisthus, bursts palace take place next her. aegisthus proudly states devised plan murder agamemnon , claim revenge father (the father of aegisthus, thyestes, tricked eating 2 of sons brother atreus, father of agamemnon). clytaemnestra claims , aegisthus have power , re-enter palace doors closing behind them.
