the westminster kennel club formed in 1877.


the westminster show first held on may 8, 1877, making second-longest continuously held sporting event in united states behind kentucky derby, first held in 1875. (both events held during world war years.) show originated show gun dogs, setters , pointers, initiated group of hunters met regularly @ westminster hotel @ irving place , sixteenth street in manhattan. decided create kennel club called westminster kennel club purpose of holding dog show. prizes these first shows included such items pearl handled pistols, of use hunters , terriermen worked these dogs in field.


held @ gilmore s garden (madison square garden) westminster show drew on 1200 dogs , proved popular scheduled 3 days extended four, club donating proceeds fourth day aspca creation of home stray , disabled dogs.


the westminster kennel club predates formation of american kennel club 7 years, , became first club admitted akc after akc s founding in 1884. breed parent clubs (e.g., afghan hound club of america) create standards judging breeds, akc administering rules shows , judging.


dogs judged against breed standards, see how close each dog matches standard, written description of ideal specimen of breed. standards may include references relating form function in performance of job dog bred for, , may include items seem arbitrary such color, eye shape, tail carriage , more. while many breeds no longer need perform original jobs , bred companionship, should still have innate ability , physical makeup perform jobs, , judge looks for.


because of space considerations @ madison square garden, entry limited 2,800 dogs , breed judging done during day @ piers 92 , 94. group , best in show judging take place in evening @ madison square garden. entry fills on first day entries accepted. since 1992, club has invited top 5 dogs in each breed pre-entered (determined number of dogs defeated @ shows during previous year) assure top dogs have chance compete.


today, westminster takes place on 2 days , nights every february. during day, dogs compete @ breed level (i.e., against other dogs of same breed). each best of breed winner (bob) advances respective group, of there 7 (sporting, hound, working, terrier, toy, non-sporting, , herding). group competition held during evenings, , 7 group winners advance final competition, 1 judge select 1 of them best in show winner. since 2014, show allowed mixed-breed dogs compete in agility event.


competition in junior showmanship (for handlers ages 8–18) has been held since 1934. 8 finalists receive scholarships post-secondary schooling. in addition, each year club (through westminster kennel foundation) awards veterinary school scholarships students 6 schools.


the winning dog becomes america s dog next year. begins reign media tour on day following show appearances on virtually television network morning shows, visit observation deck @ empire state building, , more.


the event embraced in new york city every february, salutes such world-famous partners empire state building, lights tower in purple , gold (westminster colors) during show; saks 5th avenue, features street window westminster-themed display; , new york stock exchange, invites winner ring opening bell following big win.
