hunter liggett , coast guard crew ordered pacific in april 1942. departing new york 9 april ship stopped @ canal zone , tongatapu before arriving wellington, new zealand, 28 may.


invasion of guadalcanal

the transport scheduled take part in america s first offensive operation in pacific, occupation of guadalcanal, , after amphibious training , rehearsal landing in koro islands sailed other ships 31 july solomons.


hunter liggett arrived off guadalcanal night of 6 august. in assault, america s first amphibious operation since 1898, ship assigned later wave sent boats aid in initial landings, 7 august. air attacks began on day after landing, sinking fellow transport george f. elliott. hunter liggett s gunners shot down several of attackers remained off beaches.


early on morning of 9 august, men in transport area see flashes of light engagement off savo island. japanese attempted reinforce solomons garrison , destroy transports surprised american task force , inflicted heavy losses. hunter liggett , other vulnerable transports got underway, returned transport area. after noon 9 august, began grim job of rescuing survivors sunken cruisers vincennes, astoria, , quincy.


that afternoon transport sailed wounded, in company damaged chicago, noumea, arrived 2 days later. guadalcanal campaign began refinement of amphibious techniques pay off handsomely war progressed.


the transport spent next month @ noumea , on local amphibious training operations. after period of repair @ wellington sailed 22 october efate, new hebrides, loaded marines, , returned bitterly contested guadalcanal 4 november. off-loaded near lunga point, japanese shore batteries , air attacks made every moment potentially fatal one. tokyo express due night, hunter liggett , other transports retired in evening, return next day finish landing operations.


for of next year, hunter liggett remained on hazardous duty, support of guadalcanal. made numerous trips island bringing troops noumea , new zealand, carried equipment, , transported wounded marines , japanese prisoners embattled island. threatened air , submarines, continued vital job until arriving 22 october 1943, when anchored @ efate, new hebrides.

at efate, hunter liggett took part in training operations important amphibious operation, invasion of bougainville. american strength grew , gilberts operation got underway east, task force sailed 28 october empress augusta bay, bougainville. arriving 1 november transports unloaded startling efficiency during air attacks rabaul.


hunter liggett remained in area night , once more witnessed afar japanese attempt break landing. time, in night action of empress augusta bay japanese soundly defeated rear admiral merrill s task force. hunter liggett departed day tulagi , after passage bougainville support amphibious toe-hold there 11 november sailed espiritu santo 18 november.

loading wounded @ espiritu santo, hunter liggett proceeded pago pago more casualties , sailed san francisco, arriving 9 december. several months transport underwent major repairs. then, 3 april 1944, steamed san diego begin new career amphibious training ship. next 8 months imparted lessons learned in solomons campaign carry out of largest , best executed assaults in naval history - leyte, iwo jima, okinawa, , others.


after hostilities

hunter liggett joined operation magic carpet fleet 10 december 1945 return american servicemen pacific. made voyages ulithi, guam, pearl harbor, , palaus before reporting olympia, washington, return army 9 march 1946.


hunter liggett decommissioned 18 march 1946. sold scrapping boston metals company on 30 january 1948.
