for many years position of aquila s wreck unknown. 1 source published in 1999 asserted pope had sunk off port of donggala, near palu in central sulawesi. seems incorrect.


for years recreational scuba divers knew wreck of cargo ship in ambon bay without knowing name. in october 2009 divers penetrated mystery wreck s engine room , recovered maker s plate 1 of water heaters. gave maker company in west hartlepool ss aquila had been built, @ last gave clue wreck s identity. aquila on slope on seabed off ambon, stern 15 metres (8 fathoms) below surface , bow 35 metres (19 fathoms) below surface.
