History La Grange, Illinois







the area around la grange first settled in 1830s, when chicago residents moved out west due rapid population increase in city in decade since incorporation. first settler, robert leitch, came area in 1830, 7 years before city of chicago incorporated. la grange s location, @ approximately 13 miles (21 km) chicago loop, not considered far city today s standards, in time residents enjoyed peace of rural life without communication urban residents.


the village officially incorporated on june 11, 1879. founded franklin dwight cossitt, born in granby, connecticut, , raised in tennessee, , moved chicago in 1862 built successful wholesale grocery business.


in 1870, cossitt purchased several hundred acres of farmland in lyons township, along chicago-dixon road, known today ogden avenue (u.s. highway 34). ogden avenue, on site of defunct native american trail, referred old plank road . planks stolen settlers used building material, made traveling bumpy. when chicago, burlington & quincy railroad came town, la grange milk stop called hazel glen. few miles south, through present-day willow springs, illinois , michigan canal had emerged major shipping corridor, connecting chicago , great lakes illinois , mississippi rivers.


cossitt set out build ideal suburban village - laying out streets, planting trees, donating property churches , schools, , building quality homes sale. placed liquor restrictions in land deeds sold prevent village becoming saloon town.


when cossitt began development, area served post office known kensington. upon learning of community name in illinois, cossitt decided name town in honor of la grange, tennessee, had been raised youth on uncle s cotton farm. however, today kensington remains name of 1 of village s major avenues.


after great chicago fire of 1871 destroyed of city, thousands of citizens sought new homes , opportunities far city s ills within convenient commute. la grange ideally situated accommodate them.
