the tnt shipped later planned, ran quite hot, , clocked lower nvidia had planned (90 mhz instead of 110 mhz). planned specifications should have placed card ahead of voodoo2 in theoretical performance direct3d applications, @ 90 mhz didn t match voodoo2. @ time, games supported 3dfx s proprietary glide api gave voodoo2 large advantage in speed , image quality, , games used glide api 3d acceleration, leaving tnt users no better off people didn t have 3d accelerator. in opengl comparisons such case in quake 2, voodoo2 had upper hand custom minigl driver made 3dfx cards run game (and other opengl games @ time). 3dfx minigl driver not featured opengl driver, wrapper mapped opengl functions equivalents in glide, , able attain speed advantage because of that. later on when featured opengl drivers made 3dfx line of cards, noticed slower when compared cut down minigl brother. tnt had 32-bit color support while voodoo2 supported 16-bit (although internally dithered down 24-bit color, beating tnt in 16bit quality). voodoo 2 cards gained larger speed advantage on tnt because of ability link 2 voodoo2 cards in sli setup.


tnt did not match sales of incredibly popular voodoo 2. 3dfx s customer mind share @ peak during time , nvidia still new player. again, riva 128, lack of glide api support hindered nvidia s opportunities market share growth. glide still considered best 3d gaming api available both gamers , developers. however, tnt gained nvidia attention , paved way refreshed version called riva tnt2. after all, unlike rest of competition, nvidia had come close voodoo2 in performance in games, , beaten in 32bit image quality.

tnt used on several popular cards, such diamond viper v550 , stb velocity 4400, both of managed oem wins likes of dell , gateway, among others.
