development

nemes conceived of film book scrolls of auschwitz, collection of testimonies sonderkommando members, after discovering during production of béla tarr s man london in 2005 when working tarr s assistant. nemes started working on screenplay royer in 2010 , completed first draft in 2011. writers spent several years on research, while historians such gideon greif, philippe mesnard , zoltán vági provided support film. prof. gideon greif s book wept without tears inspired director lászló nemes create film dedicated sonderkommando, delicate, complicated , sensitive topic within holocaust.


the project struggled find financiers due film s unconventional approach , nemes s lack of experience in directing feature film. intended french production french protagonist, film produced entirely in hungary. after potential co-production partners in france, israel, germany , austria turned down project, €1.5 million budget covered hungarian national film fund, hungarian tax credits , claims conference, accounting respectively 70%, 25% , 5%.


casting

nemes insisted on casting actors spoke characters own languages. new york city-based hungarian poet géza röhrig, had not acted in film since 1980s, cast main character, saul, after being considered supporting role.


filming

the film shot on 35 mm film in 28 days in budafok, budapest. 40 mm lens , academy aspect ratio of 1.375:1 adopted realise shallow focus , portrait-like narrow field of vision.


architect , liberal activist lászló rajk, worked on permanent hungarian exhibition @ auschwitz-birkenau state museum, designed re-creation of crematoria.


post-production

the film took 5 months of sound design. human voices in 8 languages recorded , attached original recording of production. sound designer tamás zányi described sound in film sort of acoustic counterpoint intentionally narrowed imagery .
