only religious works included in small surviving corpus, famous being isenheim altarpiece, completed 1515, in musée d unterlinden, colmar. 9 images on twelve panels arranged on double wings present 3 views (rather open , closed states of triptych altarpieces), according season or occasion. first view outer wings closed shows crucifixion flanked saint sebastien , saint anthony, predella showing entombment. when first set of wings opened, annunciation, angelic concert (sometimes interpreted birth of ecclesia) mary bathing christ, , resurrection displayed. third view discloses carved , gilded wood altarpiece nikolaus hagenauer, flanked temptation of st. anthony , anthony s visit saint paul. being far greatest surviving work, altarpiece contains of surviving painting surface area, being 2.65 metres high , on 5 metres wide @ fullest extent.
