the modern code of rugby league

in 1895, rugby football underwent schism in england on issues of expenses , payment injured players. led split rugby union , rugby league. luring professional sportsmen, new code of rugby league arrived in australia in 1907 , came dominate sporting scene in queensland , new south wales. however, not introduced victoria, australian rules football s vfl, paid players, increasingly popular. rugby union, however, continued played in victoria small number of amateurs.

the opening round of 2008 season saw 20,084 spectators watch storm defeat new zealand warriors in first game @ telstra dome. melbourne finished 2008 season home average attendance of 12,474, considerably larger 2007 average of 11,711. recorded largest crowd average ever in 2010 season @ 14,670. 2008 rugby league world cup, game in melbourne against england drew crowd of 36,297 @ telstra dome. second highest attended game in competition, surpassed final, played in brisbane drew 50,559.


2015 saw new records set rugby league in victoria 91,513 spectators attending second origin match @ mcg, won nsw.
