until 1852, part of brione. exclaves assigned gerra in 1920, when scattered landholdings of locarno, minusio , mergoscia in terricciole plains separated cities. in 1742, parish of gerra created when separated brione. church of san giovanni evangelista existed in 15th century destroyed twice: in late 16th century landslide , 1817 flood. present church dates 1819. church of sacro cuore in gerra piano built in 1930. in gerra valle there mill dating 16th century, , house 1470.


the inhabitants lived on agriculture , livestock. since 14th century, there have been annual summer cattle drives alpine pastures. spent winters in magadino or sottoceneri valleys. due limited agricultural land, portions of population has emigrated since 17th century. between 1860 , 1874 quarter of population emigrated. in late 20th , 21st centuries population rose due development of gerra piano important local center. however, in valley population has declined.
