there confusion correct scientific name steppe mammoth, either mammuthus armeniacus (falconer 1857) or mammuthus trogontherii (pohlig 1885). falconer used material asian sources while pohlig worked fossil remains europe , both names appear in scientific publications, adding confusion. first taxonomical overhaul done maglio 1973 decided both names synonyms, armeniacus being older, hence preferred name. however, in shoshoni & tassy 1996 decided description of pohlig prevailed, , consequently correct name steppe mammoth m. trogontherii. unclear if both forms indeed identical , authors tend use name m. trogontherii european material , m. armeniacus asian remains.
several japanese mammoth varieties pleistocene have been named, thought synonyms of m. trogontherii.
