the australian government ordered 24 f-111c aircraft replace raaf s english electric canberras in bombing , tactical strike role. while first aircraft officially handed on over 4 september 1968, structural issues delayed entry service of f-111c. twenty-four usaf f-4 phantom iis leased interim measure. phantoms delivered in september , october 1970 no. 82 wing @ raaf base amberley, queensland. during next 3 years in raaf service, 1 f-4 lost. june 1973, remaining 23 phantoms returned u.s. f-111, f-4 two-seat, multi-role, supersonic aircraft. more sophisticated canberra, capable of air-to-air , air-to-ground attack roles; had inertial navigation, gun , radar. experience f-4 contributed raaf s success f-111. raaf proposed keeping f-4 , using f-111, government decided cost great.


the f-111c entered australian service after technical problems resolved, , first f-111c accepted @ nellis air force base on 15 march 1973. on 31 march, raaf washington flying unit formed @ mcclellan air force base in california mission of ferrying first 12 f-111cs australia. unit commanded group captain john newham, later served chief of air staff between 1985 , 1988. raaf s first 6 f-111cs arrived @ amberley on 1 july 1973, , 3 subsequent groups of 6 f-111s arrived on 27 july, 28 september , 4 december. f-111cs allocated no. 1 squadron , no. 6 squadron, under control of no. 82 wing. no. 1 squadron raaf s strike squadron, , maintained nominal strength of 12 f-111s. no. 6 squadron served f-111 operational conversion unit, though operated rf-111 aircraft @ times , serve in strike role if required. once in raaf service, f-111 maintenance undertaken @ amberley. 1973 2001 no. 482 squadron conducted intermediate maintenance of aircraft, while heavy maintenance responsibility of no. 3 aircraft depot. no. 482 squadron operated raaf s f-111 flight simulator. 2001 onwards, boeing australia performed f-111 maintenance under contract australian government.
