history

the replacement spon end viaduct


the line built london , north western railway , opened on 2 september 1850.


on 26 january 1857, 23 of 28 arches of spon end viaduct collapsed. meant trains travelling south terminated @ coundon road while viaduct rebuilt. took 3 , half years complete , services coventry restored on 1 october 1860.


the line had intermediate stations @ coundon road, foleshill, longford , exhall, hawkesbury lane, bedworth , chilvers coton. in 1917, daimler halt opened between coundon road , foleshill. private halt use of workers @ adjacent daimler factory, , not accessible general public. there various branches , sidings running line serve local coal mines , factories, longest of coventry loop line (see below)


the line came under ownership of london, midland , scottish railway (lms) in 1922, , british railways in 1948. little-used longford , exhall station closed in 1949. of other intermediate stations closed on 18 january 1965 (along on coventry leamington line) when passenger services withdrawn consequence of reshaping of british railways report. following this, line became freight-only next 22 years.


british rail restored passenger services line on 11 may 1987, under speller act. there no intermediate stations on re-opened line until 16 may 1988 when rebuilt bedworth station opened.


coventry loop line

the coventry loop line freight-only branch ran 3 spires junction on coventry–nuneaton line humber road junction on coventry–rugby line. line built freight trains avoid running through coventry station, , first opened in 1914. had 2 goods stations @ bell green , gosford green, number of sidings serving local industries, never had scheduled passenger service, although passenger trains used line diversionary route during engineering works.


humber road junction closed in 1963, after goods traffic dwindled, , branch became long siding 3 spires junction. last traffic chrysler factory ended in 1981, , rest of branch closed in september year. track lifted in 1982. of former trackbed of line has since been built on part of a444 phoenix way.


2016 station openings

the line runs near ricoh arena stadium on northern edge of coventry. funding 2 new stations, coventry arena , bermuda park, approved in december 2011. new plans see number of carriages increased 1 3 , service upgraded half hourly, new platform built @ coventry station , future extensions of line kenilworth , leamington spa. after completion of electric spine project, such service operated electric multiple units.


on 26 june 2014 buckingham group announced company awarded contract build 2 new stations.


work on building stations started in october 2014 stations opening on 18 january 2016, upgrade @ coventry station allow additional train services between coventry , nuneaton, calling @ new stations, not ready until summer 2017.


service upgrade

from december 2019, services on coventry nuneaton route upgraded west midlands trains, current single-car class 153s replaced 2-car class 172 units, , number of services doubled following opening of intended new platform @ coventry. saturdays (which coincide games @ ricoh arena) see 3 trains per hour in each direction.
