born in ridderkerk, strootman began career sparta rotterdam, making professional debut during 2007–08 season. signed contract extension club in november 2008. after relegated @ end of 2009–10 eredivisie season, played sparta in eerste divisie.


utrecht

in january transfer window of 2011, strootman signed fc utrecht. played utrecht in second half of 2010–11 season, before moving psv in june 2011.

on 26 january 2015, strootman substituted in serie fixture against fiorentina after sustaining further damage anterior cruciate ligament. 3 days later, confirmed player again undergo knee surgery. on 26 august, reported that, in spite of failing make single appearance in 7 months, strootman s injury required further surgery sidelined player majority of 2015–16 serie season. made first appearance of season on 21 february 2016, substitute in 5–0 home defeat of palermo. on 2 may, made first start in on 15 months, playing full 90 minutes in roma s 3–2 win @ genoa. ended season 5 appearances, including 2 starts. assist of season came in 3–1 final day victory on milan @ san siro.


on 20 august 2016, strootman captained roma in opening match of 2016–17 serie season, 4–0 home win against udinese. in team s second fixture, scored first goal since january 2014 roma drew 2–2 @ cagliari.


on 29 may 2017 strootman signed new 5-year contract 2017 serie runner-up.
