the sandpipers have cosmopolitan distribution, occurring across of world s land surfaces except antarctica , driest deserts. majority of family breed @ moderate high latitudes in northern hemisphere, in fact accounting northerly breeding birds in world. few species breed in tropical regions, ten of snipes , woodcocks , remaining species being unusual tuamotu sandpiper, breeds in french polynesia (although prior arrival of humans in pacific there several other closely related species of polynesian sandpiper).
