the original draft of salem s lot depicted different fate callahan. rather forced drink barlow s blood , leaving town damned, marks vampire knife before committing suicide. furious, vampire desecrates priest s body, decapitating , hanging upside down. scene changed king before published story, though included in section of deleted scenes featured in deluxe limited edition released centipede press in 2005 , later trade edition.


1979 miniseries

in 1979 salems lot miniseries, father callahan featured minor character. played james gallery. callahan first briefly seen officiating @ funeral of danny glick. later, ben mears , susan norton have brief interview him try convince him join them against evil in town. callahan skeptical , makes brief comment on how church s view of evil has changed. afterwards, callahan @ petrie house talk mark , parents mark s nocturnal experiences. abruptly, surge of electricity , tremor, vampire barlow enters, kills petrie parents, seizes mark , challenges callahan. exchange, although shortened, same in original novel, straker, present, interpreting more monstrous , less articulate barlow. barlow lets mark go in order confront callahan, falteringly hold on crucifix while facing vampire. barlow plucks crucifix priest s hand, , callahan not seen again, presumably killed.

2004 miniseries

james cromwell father callahan


in 2004 salem s lot miniseries, father callahan portrayed james cromwell. beginning of film shows event taking place after of story; ben mears enters homeless shelter in big city , sees callahan giving out food. mears confronts callahan , chases him stairs struggle. callahan shoots mears, mears pushes himself , callahan out window , 2 of them land on police car. rest of film told in flashback ben explains hospital orderly why attacked callahan.


callahan portrayed in novel (although there scene him browsing satanic porn site), after barlow forces him drink blood, callahan not leave town in shame. instead, takes straker s place barlow s attendant. callahan later visits matt burke in hospital , murders him. after ben mears destroys barlow, callahan leads remaining vampires of salem s lot new unholy congregation while town burns around them.


as ben mears tells story orderly, callahan suffocated pillow mark petrie in hospital.


the framing story of callahan living in big city, working in homeless shelter , being pushed out of upper storey window inspired events in dark tower: wolves of calla novel, though miniseries not use of further material featuring callahan other dark tower books, feature return , redemption.
