despite intense mining, tourist , industrial exploitation area has suffered centuries, territory around cartagena city hosts extraordinary natural wealth , diversity, large number of botanical endemic species. part of area subject different levels of legal protection.

cartagena’s coastal mountains have concentration of 1 of largest botanical biodiversities of iberian peninsula. european , african species both present, number of remarkable ibero-african species, found on southern coasts of spain (mostly in provinces of murcia , almería) , north africa. among these, there stands out tetraclinis articulata or sandarac (sabina mora o ciprés de cartagena—literally cartagena s cypress in spanish) endemic morocco, algeria, tunisia, malta, , cartagena, growing @ relatively low altitudes in hot, dry subtropical mediterranean climate. species endangered siempreviva de cartagena (limonium carthaginense), rabogato del mar menor (sideritis marmironensis), zamarrilla de cartagena (teucrium carthaginense), manzanilla de escombreras (anthemis chrysantha), garbancillo de tallante (astragalus nitidiflorus) , jara de cartagena cistus heterophyllus carthaginensis ).

mar menor, salty lagoon separated mediterranean sea sand bar 22 kilometres (14 miles) in length , variable width 100 1,200 metres (328 3,937 feet). has surface area of 170 km (66 sq mi), coastal length of 70 km (43 mi), , warm , clear water relatively high salinity, not exceed 7 metres (23 feet) in depth. belongs 4 municipalities, including cartagena. in 1994, included on list of ramsar convention (nº706) conservation , sustainable utilization of wetlands. 1 of specially protected areas of mediterranean importance (spami) united nations. 5 volcanic islands (perdiguera, mayor or del barón, del ciervo, redonda , del sujeto) el carmolí , san ginés hills, hita , amoladora beaches, lo poyo salt marsh , salt mines of marchamalo protected well.
