four f-111c aircraft modified rf-111c reconnaissance configuration. these aircraft met raaf s requirement aircraft reinstate photographic reconnaissance capacity. while original order f-111s specified 18 strike variants , 6 reconnaissance variants, raaf later agreed accept 24 strike aircraft , later retrofit 6 reconnaissance pallets. in 1971 usaf dropped plans fit of f-111s reconnaissance aircraft, sold design of reconnaissance pallet australia $3 million. @ time raaf decided fit pallet 4 rather 6 aircraft. reconnaissance pallet contains 4 cameras , infrared linescanner unit , fitted in f-111 s weapons bay. rf-111cs retained strike capability.
the first f-111c, a8-126 selected conversion rf-111c variant modified @ general dynamics plant @ fort worth, texas between october 1978 , 18 april 1979. after 4 months of test flights, aircraft returned australia in august 1979 conducted further tropical weather trials @ darwin. other 3 aircraft modified raaf s no. 3 aircraft depot @ raaf base amberley in 1980, using kits purchased general dynamics. rf-111c variant proved highly successful, , considered among best tactical reconnaissance aircraft in world. 3 of 4 rf-111cs remained in raaf service until 2010. other aircraft retired in 2006 after suffering damage landing on belly after 1 of main wheels separated during take off; although aircraft repairable judged not worthwhile doing due impending retirement of entire f-111 fleet. raaf not have aircraft rf-111c s intelligence, surveillance , reconnaissance capabilities since retired.
