the romans improved existing cities, such tarragona (tarraco), , established others zaragoza (caesaraugusta), mérida (augusta emerita), valencia (valentia), león ( legio septima ), badajoz ( pax augusta ), , palencia. peninsula s economy expanded under roman tutelage. hispania supplied rome food, olive oil, wine , metal. emperors trajan, hadrian, , theodosius i, philosopher seneca, , poets martial, quintilian, , lucan born in hispania. hispanic bishops held council of elvira around 306.


after fall of western roman empire in 5th century, parts of hispania came under control of germanic tribes of vandals, suebi, , visigoths.


the collapse of western roman empire did not lead same wholesale destruction of western classical society happened in areas roman britain, gaul , germania inferior during middle ages, although institutions , infrastructure did decline. spain s present languages, religion, , basis of laws originate period. centuries of uninterrupted roman rule , settlement left deep , enduring imprint upon culture of spain.
