the festival started in 1988 jean boileau , attracted 50 000 visitors , 50 balloons. through following years festival became larger , 1 of biggest festivals in canada. attendance @ 1 point reached on 225,000 people , had on 150 balloons. in 1998, festival hosting world hot air airship championship, disputed 16 teams europe, china , united states.


fatal accident , festival departure (2001-2002)

on july 14, 2001, boileau general manager since beginning involved in horrific hot-air balloon accident east of ottawa international airport on leitrim road. balloon, while trying land in open field, struck hydro wires after sudden wind gust. engulfed in flames. boileau sustained multiple burns while trying rescue 15-year-old daughter, julie, trapped inside balloon s basket. unfortunately, rescue effort failed girl died instantly while 2 other people sustained burns. boileau, despite fact subsequent transport canada report mention accident caused pilot error , bad weather conditions, later honored then-governor general adrienne clarkson bravery. in 2007 commemorative plaque unveiled @ la baie park boileau s daughter known festival s first volunteer , tree planted on site in honor in conjunction of festival s 20th anniversary honored founder of festival.


after event, never piloted hot-air balloon , left general manager spot of festival afterwards - speculations new city of gatineau administration of yves ducharme tried force him out of job offering spot new city chief of communications. handled position few months during rehabilitation, position later removed , changed position of director of communications , city did not appointed him due health reasons caused accident. speculated ducharme administration wanted remove people associated former city of gatineau s last mayor, robert labine , ducharme s mayoral rival in 2001 elections new city of gatineau. however, settlement between city , boileau made in 2003. departure of boileau had put festival s future in doubt several of associates left festival s organization.
