irrigation

the bureau of reclamation owns canal, imperial irrigation district operates it. water canal diverted @ imperial diversion dam. all-american canal feeds, east west, coachella canal, east highline canal, central main canal, , westside main canal. these 5 main branches of canal , network of smaller canals gradually reduce flow of all-american canal until ends @ small drop in western imperial valley drains westside main canal. main canal 82 miles (132 km), total drop of 175 feet (53 m), width of 150 feet (46 m) 700 feet (210 m) , depth of 7 feet (2.1 m) 50 feet (15 m) canals smaller run west because carry less water.


power

eight hydroelectric power plants have been constructed along drops in all-american canal system. drops 1 through 5, pilot knob, east highline , double weir located on all-american canal. power plant, turnip, located on central main canal branch. power plants relatively small , have combined capacity of 58 mw. electricity generation dictated water delivery needs. there 7.2 mw pumped storage plant @ senator wash dam. water senator wash reservoir released when water needs exceed flows @ parker dam.


runoff

runoff farmland irrigated all-american canal make of flows in alamo river , new river, both of drain salton sea, providing of water. rest smaller rivers , drainage systems. historically, salton sea had been periodically flooded extreme colorado river floods , dried before being reflooded. if not all-american canal, salton sea have dried long ago. system transports silt, selenium , salts colorado river salton sea. because there no outlet ocean, these salts , minerals concentrated evaporation.
