in october 1957, news of soviet union s launch of sputnik 1 reaches town of coalwood, people work in coal mines. townspeople gather outside on night of broadcast, see satellite orbit across sky. homer h. hickam jr., filled awe, sets out build own rockets out of coalwood. family , classmates not respond kindly, father , mine superintendent, john, wants homer join him in mines.


despite this, homer teams math geek quentin wilson, has interest in rocket engineering; support of friends, roy lee cooke , sherman o dell, , science teacher, ms. frieda j. riley — known miss reily, 4 construct small rockets. while first launches failures, experiment new fuels , designs , succeed. local paper runs story them after few of launches. nevertheless, accused of starting forest fire astray rocket , arrested. after john picks homer, roy lee beaten abusive stepfather, vernon. john intervenes , rescues roy lee, warning vernon protect him roy lee s late father have.

meanwhile, workers union go on strike against john. night, when family eats dinner, vernon shoots kitchen , misses john. homer , jim express concern father, john dismisses fears. fed up, homer confronts father, , heated argument ensues. mines set close down , there nothing trouble , no future homer in mines. resents father s pressures follow in mine work , storms out of house, vowing never return.


at fair, homer s display received well. after scheduled few days show, prizes awarded, , homer enjoys top popularity , sightseeing. overnight, steals machined rocket part model – de laval nozzle – autographed picture of dr. wernher von braun. homer makes urgent phone call home help. mother, elsie, implores john end ongoing strike mr. bolden, bykovsky s replacement, can use mine s machine shop build replacement nozzle. john relents when elsie, fed lack of support son, threatens leave him. town s support, homer wins top prize , bombarded scholarship offers colleges. congratulated inspiration, von braun, not realize engineer s identity until has gone.


homer returns coalwood hero , visits miss riley, dying of hodgkin s disease. launch of largest rocket yet (the miss riley) last scene of film. john, never attended of launchings, attends , given honor of pushing launch button. miss riley reaches altitude of 30,000 feet (9,100 m) — higher summit of mount everest. crowd (and rest of town) looks skies, john puts hand on homer s shoulder , smiles, showing homer proud of him.


at end of film, series of vignettes reveals true outcomes of main characters lives.
