the title of landvogt appears in old swiss confederacy in 1415. landvogt ruled landvogtei, either representing sovereign canton, or acting on behalf of confederacy, or subset thereof, administering condominium (gemeine herrschaft) shared between several cantons. in case of condominiums, cantons took turns in appointing landvogt period of 2 years.


in exceptional cases, population of landvogtei allowed elect own landvogt. concerned oberhasli in particular, nominally subject territory of berne, enjoyed special status military ally. office of landvogt abolished in 1798, foundation of helvetic republic.
