in 2008, u.s. congress changed nichd’s name eunice kennedy shriver national institute of child health , human development. in december 2008, sports illustrated named first recipient of sportsman of year legacy award. on may 9, 2009, smithsonian institution s national portrait gallery (npg) in washington, d.c., unveiled historic portrait of her, first portrait npg has ever commissioned of individual had not served u.s. president or first lady. portrait depicts 4 special olympics athletes (including loretta claiborne) , 1 best buddies participant. painted david lenz, winner of outwin boochever portrait competition in 2006. part of portrait competition prize, npg commissioned work winning artist depict living subject collection. lenz, son, sam, has down syndrome , enthusiastic special olympics athlete, inspired shriver’s dedication working people intellectual disabilities.


shriver became involved dorothy hamill s special skating program in special olympics after hamill s olympics games ice-skating win. in september 2010, state university of new york @ brockport, home of 1979 special olympics, renamed football stadium after shriver.


in july 2017, posthumously received arthur ashe courage award @ 2017 espy awards.
