the yemeni government s response protests prompted backlash traditional allies united states , saudi arabia. number of national governments have called on president saleh resign, , gulf co-operation council introduced initiative calling upon saleh relinquish power in favor of new, democratically elected government.


on 7 october 2011, tawakul karman awarded nobel peace prize visible role woman in arab spring movement , human right activist in yemen. shared prize liberian president ellen johnson sirleaf , liberian peace activist leymah gbowee. before prizes awarded, 12 other women had ever been granted award.
