mahathir hard-working student. discipline imposed father motivated him study, , showed little interest in sports. started out primary education @ seberang perak malay boys school in 1930 , studied there 2 years. however, in 1933, won position in selective english medium secondary school, having become fluent in english ahead of primary school peers. schools closed during japanese occupation of malaya during world war ii, went business, first selling coffee , later pisang goreng (banana fritters) , other snacks. after war, graduated secondary school completing senior cambridge exams in december 1946 , enrolled study medicine @ king edward vii college of medicine in singapore (now part of national university of singapore). there met future wife, siti hasmah mohamad ali, fellow medical student. after graduated, mahathir worked doctor in government service before marrying in 1956. returned alor setar following year set own practice. success of practice, malay doctor in town, allowed him build large house, invest in various businesses and, pointedly, employ chauffeur drive pontiac catalina. , siti hasmah had first child, marina, in 1957, before conceiving 3 others , adopting 3 more on following 28 years.
