these later, , larger, compound mallet locomotives built ansaldo in genova in 1938 largely replace earlier types, both 440 series , unsuccessful 441 series, simple locomotives (i.e., non-compound) , found liable run out of steam on heavy grades of line. other locomotives tank engines large side tanks , rear coal bunker, under cover of cab roof in design. these quite hefty machines, required tough demands of terrain.
