the remains of dunaverty castle stand on rocky head land on south east corner of kintyre, scotland. headland built on forms natural stronghold sea on 3 sides , approachable north. attached mainland narrow path. known castle accessed drawbridge.
13th century
in 1248, henry iii, king of england allowed walter byset buy stores ireland dunaverty castle had seized , fortifying, apparently in revenge hospitality given alexander ii, king of scotland english pirates. during same year castle taken allan, son of earl of atholl, , byset taken prisoner.
in 1263, dunaverty castle garrisoned alexander iii, king of scotland during norwegian campaign of hákon hákonarson, king of norway.

15th century

16th century
the castle repaired crown between 1539 , 1542. in january 1544, commission in queen mary s name given captain, constable , keeper of castle of dunaverty, deliver artillery , ammunition earl of argyll , in april of year argyll received 12-year tack of north , south kintyre, including castle. castle attacked earl of surrey in 1588 no damage done.
17th century
in 1626, lordship of kintyre reconstituted in favour of earl of argyll , dunaverty castle denoted principal messuage. argyll bestowed lordship of kintyre on james, eldest son second marriage, who, in 1635, @ dunaverty, granted charter of lordship viscount dunluce, eldest son of randal macdonnell, 1st earl of antrim. transfer set aside scottish privy council, no doubt on complaint argyll s eldest son, marquis of lorn, had bitterly resented father s bestowal of lordship on younger half-brother. on 12 december 1636, lorn received charter, under great seal, of lordship of kintyre, castle of dunaverty principal messuage.
during civil war dunaverty besieged in 1647 scottish supporters of oliver cromwell led general david leslie (leslie later became royalist). macdonalds surrendered , 300 of them massacred. incident became known battle of dunaverty, or dunaverty massacre . castle nothing more ruin now, known blood rock massacre took place there.
