andrew bell born @ st. andrews, in scotland on 27 march 1753 , attended st. andrews university did in mathematics , natural philosophy, graduating in 1774.


in 1774 sailed virginia private tutor , remained there until 1781 when left avoid involvement in war of independence. returned scotland, surviving shipwreck on way, , officiated @ episcopal chapel in leith. ordained deacon in 1784 , priest in church of england in 1785.


in february 1787 went out india , went ashore @ madras, stayed 10 years. became chaplain number of british regiments , gave course of lectures. in 1789 appointed superintendent of orphan asylum illegitimate , orphaned sons of officers. claimed see malabar children teaching others alphabet drawing in sand , decided develop similar method, putting bright children in charge of less bright. opposed corporal punishment , used system of rewards.


in bell s adaption of madras, or monitorial system later came known, schoolmaster teach small group of brighter or older pupils basic lessons, , each of them relate lesson group of children.
