el perdon de los pecados (1985-1990)

the 1985 painting el misterio del mundo (the mystery of world) represented watershed in el hortelano s artistic career—iconographically, formally, , chromatically. optimism flooded huge canvas—a bright, open space. protagonist walks happily along without care, intent. looks upwards toward sun/orange growing on tree, not @ girl bending down, burying slices of orange, reveal heart carved in bark of tree side. work first in series entitled el perdón de los pecados (the forgiveness of sins), collection of paintings in intense, flaming yellows, oranges, , reds, featuring strings , belts criss-crossing canvas. in 1986, came similar design cover of gabinete caligari’s record al calor del amor en un bar . @ end of year, magazine diario 16 devoted eight-page supplement him, including drawings , articles on senses, commissioned josé miguel ullán, , entitled el planeta humano . meanwhile, madrid scene had defined , consolidated position artistic movement, , el hortelano took part in large exhibition held in la coruña. invited join sicilia, cristina iglesias, juan muñoz, , javier de juan in exhibition, @ menéndez pelayo international university in santander, called nuevos creadores (new creators).

savitaipale (1995)

while in rome, el hortelano fell in love sanna kohonen, painter. @ end of stay @ academy, went finland spend 3 months in savitaipale, town in south, near russian border. used town s name title series of works on handmade paper in protagonists ants, leaves , drops of water. technical experiment, immersed painted paper in lake near log cabin lived, researching how paint natural phenomena.

in 1991, returned madrid kohonen. after 2 years in center of madrid, moved house in las rozas, village in hills north of city. there completed pater noster , exhibited it, in 1994, @ bárcena gallery. stayed in las rozas 5 years, on own, kohonen decided return finland permanently. worked ceesepe , mariscal on illustrations book musician kiko veneno, cantos inoxidables de nuestra tierra. design sleeve of radio futura album tierra features man lying on ground gazing @ starry sky , ant climbing walls of huge ants’ nest.

osa mayor (1996-2004)

in 1996, el hortelano started new series, osa mayor (ursa major or big dipper). in eleven works of first series completed in 1997, branches of trees sporting snails, transparent drops of water, , resin cross night sky shooting stars , tiny comets. second series comprised 7 large canvases—each 1 named after star in big dipper constellation—with lyrical images depicting solitary man , diminutive creatures juxtaposed against immensity of universe. used composition in poster 1997 madrid carnival, in smiling couple surrounded masks contemplate brilliant-blue dusk sky lit constellation, symbolized in city’s coat of arms. designed osa mayor watch watch-celona.

red sea paintings

in 1998, accompanied painter darío Álvarez basso, went india, nepal, , jordan. visit red sea on segment of aforementioned voyage inspired series of canvases thousands of marine creatures dart in , out of coral. experimented transparencies, superimposing several layers of glazes, varnishes, , resins create sensation of aquatic , crystalline mass, marine life share transparency of rock , coral.

madre universo

el hortelano returned madrid, @ end of 1998, , moved flat opposite el retiro park. in 2000, designed 1 of floats in procession of 3 wise men on twelfth night, madrid city council, named madre universo (mother universe), float featured moving planets—represented friends wearing costumes—surrounded dozens of children dressed stars.
