the trans-caspian railway (turkmenbashi - balkanabat - bereket - ashgabat - mary - türkmenabat) runs through ashgabat east west. since 2006 there been train line towards north, trans karakum railway. in may 2009 restoration of ashgabat railway station completed.


in ashgabat there 2 intercity bus stations, 1 located near teke bazaar, second @ old airport. there daily buses archman, dashoguz , turkmenabat. new international passenger bus terminal of ashgabat commissioned on september 5, 2014.


public transport in city consists of buses. more 60 bus lines cover total range of more 2,230 kilometres (1,386 miles) 700 buses running on urban routes. city uses mercedes-benz , hyunda buses. bus timetables , detailed schematic map of route @ every stop. distances between stops 300–500 meters. october 19, 1964 december 31, 2011 city had ashgabat trolleybus system. @ beginning of twentieth century narrow-gauge railway operated steam-power, connecting city suburbs firyuza.


on 18 october 2006, ashgabat cable car opened, connecting city foothills of kopetdag.


ashgabat monorail commenced service in 2016, becoming first monorail in central asia region.
