as 1550, henry ii asked build bridge here because existing pont notre-dame overloaded, expense @ time.


in february 1578, decision build bridge made henry iii laid first stone in 1578, year when foundations of 4 piers , 1 abutment completed. pierre des isles, 1 of builders, convinced supervisory commission bridge, straight, more resistant river currents, if 2 sections built @ slight angle, change adopted in may 1578.


further design changes made during summer of 1579. first, number of arches changed 8 , 4 7 , five. not problem on north side, nothing had been built, on south, 4 piles , abutment on left bank laid, addition of fifth arch necessitated reducing length of platform on island, terre-plein, 28.5 toises 19. second, decided allow houses built on bridge (though never were). required widening of bridge. remaining piers built on next 9 years. after long delay beginning in 1588, due political unrest , wars of religion, construction resumed in 1599 under reign of henry iv. bridge opened traffic in 1604 , completed in july 1606. inaugurated henri iv in 1607.
