location

the town lies in southwesternmost lower saxony, near border netherlands , boundary north rhine-westphalia, on river vechte. nearest major city hengelo in netherlands, 20 kilometres (12 miles) southwest of nordhorn. nearest german cities münster, 75 km (47 mi) southeast, , osnabrück, 85 km (53 mi) east.

the settlement of nordhorn had centre here, on strategic grounds later moved island in river vechte. town rights granted in 1379, , older centre given name oude dorp – old village .

bimolten


called bimolt in 1252 , bimolte in 1213, opinions rather divided on name s origin. specht says refers heaps of earth, reurik says refers grove woods (bi m holte, in more modern german might rendered bei dem holze or beim holz), , abels holds refers settlement on field. bookholt


the name refers beech (buche) or birch (birke) grove. (according h.specht - nordhorn - geschichte einer grenzstadt)


brandlecht


called bramtelghet in 1313, name comes bram (gorse) , telge (twig). (according dr. ernst kühle - brandlecht - der grafschafter, folge 160, june 1966).


frensdorf


called frenstrup in low german, name might come personal name. called friethelstorpe or frieldorp 800, , vrinsthorpe 1000. (according dr. ernst kühle - frensdorf - jahrbuch des heimatvereins 1971).

earlier known vrendeswegen, name s meaning have been lying on way frensdorf .


hesepe


the name hesepe refers community s location on river vechte (epe means water). (according dr. ernst kühle - hesepe - jahrbuch, heimatverein 1982)


hestrup


hestrup first known in 1150 hersebruc , in 1212 hersedorp ( steed village ). ending –dorf or –trup, cognate english word , placename ending thorpe , identifies farming community came being enclosed settlement 800 christianity s arrival. (according dr. ernst kühle - hestrup - der grafschafter, folge 168, february 1967)


hohenkörben


hohenkörben arose 600 hankorve in bakelde s market on dune ridge limited space. exact interpretation of name has not been achieved; however, town of neuenhaus has outlying centre name of hohenkörben-veldhausen. (according dr. ernst kühle - der grafschafter, folge 170, may 1967)


newer quarters

blanke


the blanke (the article used name in german – die blanke) once sunken heath , bog area, raised @ edges, between water pools glinted in sunlight. thus, called blänke. 2 biggest große blanke , kleine blanke . , by, area dried , before second world war there building on raised edges (dorotheenstr., klarastr.). after war came more widespread settlement refugees , textile workers. reference earlier heath ponds, new neighbourhood given name blanke, street names, such blankering , innere blanke. 1 can impression of area once looked visiting dutch nature protection area de bergvennen west of nordhorn.


blumensiedlung


in 1920s, scheme undertaken build houses jobless miners ruhr area hired textile industry, , young nordhorn families. because streets named after flowers, new neighbourhood called blumensiedlung ( flower settlement ).


bussmaate


earlier meadowland, so-called buss maate owned farmer busch in altendorf (buss farmer s name). 1910, textile manufacturer rawe bought land , had spinning works built there. in 1913 there followed workers’ dwellings.


klausheide


this community named son of founder of klausheide estate (krupp von bohlen und halbach), named claus (heide means heath ). @ first, settlement known die claus-heide.


neuberlin


in 20th century, southeast of denekamper straße near frensdorf housing coöperative founded on initiative mr. mäulen. tackled job of building houses. thank mr. mäulen efforts, new neighbourhood named neuberlin – literally new berlin – after city born.


stadtflur


in earlier centuries, nordhorn s townsfolk had so-called peat cutting rights in area, @ time moorland belonging community of bakelde. in 1864, area divided , nordhorn received plot part of municipal area. therefore called stadtsche flur, or town lea . turn of century there building here , area came called stadtflur. stadtflur has 7,700 inhabitants, putting among nordhorn s bigger stadtteile.


streng


although modern german meaning of streng stern or strict , name comes so-called strang ( string or strand ), row of dunes. strang stretches bogenstraße nyhoegen bridge on bentheimer straße. in 19th century, textile manufacturer ludwig povel built workers’ dwellings on near part of strang in bogenstr.-ludwigstr. area. on farther part of strang, private houses built in 1930s , later.
