dec fonz-11 (f11) chipset


the pro-325 , -350 used f-11 chipset (as used in lsi-11/23 systems) create single-board pdp-11 6 expansion slots of proprietary cti (computing terminal interconnect) bus using 90-pin zif connectors. pro family used dual rx50 floppy drives storage; pro-325 had floppies, , 350 , 380 included internal hard drive. mainline pdp-11s used separate serial terminals console , display devices; pro family used in-built bit-mapped graphics drive combined console , display.


all other i/o devices in pro family different (in cases, radically different) counterparts on other pdp-11 models. example, while internal bus supported direct memory access (dma), none of available i/o devices used feature. interrupt system implemented using intel pc chips of time, again made different pdp-11 standard interrupt architecture. these reasons, support of pro family required extensive modifications previously-existing operating system software, , pro not run standard pdp-11 software without modification.


the default pro-3xx operating system dec s professional operating system (p/os), modified version of rsx-11m menu-driven core user interface. industry critics complained user interface awkward, slow, , inflexible, offering few advantages on command-line based ms-dos user interface coming widespread use.


other available operating systems included dec rt-11, venturcom venix, , 2.9bsd unix.



dec jaws-11 (j11) chipset


later, professional 380 (pro-380) introduced using faster j-11 chip set (as used in 11/73 systems). however, due clocking issues on motherboard, j-11 chip ran @ 10 mhz instead of 16-18 mhz, making pro-380 slower stock 11/73 system.


the dec professional series pc-38n pro-380 real-time interface (rti) used console vax 8500 , 8550. rti has 2 serial line units: 1 connects vax environmental monitoring module (emm) , other spare used data transfer. rti has programmable peripheral interface (ppi) consisting of 3 8-bit ports transferring data, address, , control signals between console , vax console interface.
